NAIROBI – The High Court will control a fresh application for bonds sought by former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Weitu.
Waititu, who has been jailed since February after his conviction in a corruption case, is seeking to be released on bonds waiting for his appeal hearing and decision.
The Director of the Prosecutor (DPP) opposed his fresh application, claiming that the matter had already been decided by the same court and that the updated request was unacceptable.
The former governor was sentenced to a 12-year prison or a fine of SH53 million after the magistrate’s court pleaded guilty to corruption-related charges.
Judge Lucy Nyugna had rejected the first bid on the bond on March 3, 2025.
Waititu’s previous application citing medical venues was rejected because it did not meet the legal threshold for release on bail appeals.
The former governor was similarly prohibited from competing for political seats for seven years.
Waititu was charged with his wife, Susan Ndung’u.
