Nairobi – MOI University has issued a redundant notice to the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) to reduce lecturers due to a decline in student numbers and the cash crisis.
According to the agency’s representative deputy prime minister, Kipragat Kotutt, this creates “a difficult operating environment and the university challenges its financial obligations.”
“As a result, they are forced to consider their operations, such as paying for employee emoluments.”
He further noted that the move is consistent with Section 40 of the Kenya Employment Act 2007 and the University’s Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with UASU.
“This decision is needed by the decline in revenues brought about by the decline in student numbers,” he said.
“During the notice period, we will consult with affected employees and representatives of their union in accordance with the law and the UASU CBA. Our duty is to explore all possible alternatives to limit the impact of redundancy, including potential redundancy roles, where possible,” he said.
Affected employees are entitled to retirement benefits, pay in lieu of notice, payment of unpaid leave, and other appropriate benefits as per statutory requirements.
Details of affected employees and proposed timelines for redundancy will be communicated in time. Meanwhile, universities seek cooperation during the process to ensure that they are carried out fairly and transparently.
