National police say preliminary investigations show that the fatal shooting of Kassipur MP Charles on Ond was a planned and well-performed attack.
A statement from the police chief’s office on Thursday said a shooting that occurred at the city’s morgue on Wednesday night was planned. However, no arrests have been made so far.
He was shot dead by the assailant riding a motorcycle around 7:30pm. Witnesses reported that the white Toyota crown was stopped at a traffic light as it approached a motorcycle carrying two men. One of them, Pillion’s passenger, was illuminated and walked to the passenger side of the vehicle and fired before fleeing with the rider.
The MP driver and another unharmed passenger rushed him to Nairobi Hospital where he was declared dead upon arrival.
Parliamentary Speaker Moses Wetangala condemned the murder, sought a comprehensive investigation and directed that the findings would be submitted before the Congress.
“Hon’s loss is not a tragedy for his family and the people of Kassipur, but a huge loss to the people,” the speaker said.
He urged security agencies to establish motivation and move quickly to arrest those responsible, adding that “Congressional leadership is fully involved and will closely monitor the progress of the investigation while in touch with the families.”
The motives for the murder remain unknown, but several theories have emerged online.
Some social media users have linked the assassination to recent violence in WED’s constituency, accusing the MP of the attacks on political enemies. In the video and post shared since Wednesday night, some Kassipur residents have vowed to revenge, claiming that the murders of opposition have been sorted out.
Other explanations suggest that he may have been targeted for criticism of his voice against government officials and fellow leaders, and are often distributed on public forums.
Police pledged a thorough investigation and assure the public that the people behind the attacks would be brought to justice.
