Kenyans should be careful, these attractive bike offers on Facebook are not from asset finance company WATU
In short, fraudulent Facebook pages and accounts continue to target unsuspecting Kenyans. Use the name Asset Finance Company Watu to keep an eye on this Facebook page and provide your bike with credit.
The Facebook page Watu Credit Company believes it is the official Facebook page of Watu, an asset finance company that Kenyans operate in at least six African countries, including Kenya.
On this page, we use Watu’s logo and graphics to promote bikes from various brands and invite users to buy with credit.
Users claim that they can get a new bike by paying a deposit of 15,000 KSH (approximately 115 USD). The ad also includes a second-hand bike offer.
This page asks interested users to invoke or send a WhatsApp message to the phone number provided. It boasts over 13,000 followers, and its posts elicited inquiries from interested users.
But should this page and its offers be trusted? I checked.
Scammer’s page
African Check noted that this page follows the same pattern as other fraudulent Facebook pages and accounts we have previously exposed. There is a shortage of websites for customers to enquire and trade, and they use unbranded images in their ads, but this is pretty much repeated.
A legitimate financial institution has a website or app that lets customers know the nature of their business and allows them to conduct transactions. Their social media accounts specialize in graphics that include logos and unique brand colors, and while the ads are clear, they send similar messages.
Africa Check was searched online and found Watu’s official website https://watuafrica.com. The company says its official Facebook pages are Watu Kenya and Watu Simu Kenya. The phone numbers provided by the suspicious page are not listed on Watu’s website or Facebook page. This is a clear indication that it is not associated with the company.
The Facebook page in question is executed by a scammer and the offer should be ignored.
