Wrestling legend Kevin von Erich is open about a major tragedy. I recall the courageous call he received from his brother Kelly, shortly before he took his own life.
In the teaser for the new documentary, “The Real Iron Claw” – Kevin recalls a devastating call from 1993, who asked Kelly not to shoot himself, and pleads not to leave him alone completely after the death of his other brothers.
It’s heartbreaking – Kevin says that Kelly finally reassured him that he was fine during the phone call, but he knew something was wrong, so he called their father, Fritz von Erich, to warn him.
Kevin tries to tell his father that Kelly is in a dark place, but Fritz brushes it off and says he’s too busy to talk. He has the habit of chalking his father’s reaction by old age and pouring drinks around 5pm… and he called a little later.
Kevin took matters into his own hands and drove into the car for three and a half hours to go to Kelly, but by the time he arrived it was already too late.
“The Real Iron Claw” premieres on Monday, April 21st with the research discovery from 9pm to 11pm. This dives into the heartbreaking truth of life behind the legendary wrestling family filled with loss, addiction, and all the darkness that plagued the von Erich dynasty.
The story was eventually immortalized in 2023’s “Iron Claws,” starring Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White and Harris Dickinson.
