Foreign Minister Sarah Bethorrow Nyanti met with President Mahamato Idris Debbie of Chad at the Presidential Palace in Najamena, Chad on Tuesday, April 8, 2025. The conference highlighted their shared commitment to increasing diplomatic relations between the two countries and promoting greater cooperation in various sectors.
Foreign Minister Nyanti conveyed a heartfelt message of gratitude from Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boachey and the people of Chad, who expressed his deep gratitude to Chadians and Chadians.
Foreign Minister Nyanti emphasized that her visit symbolizes not only a diplomatic mission, but also the dawn of a new era of bilateral relations.
“The purpose of my visit today is to deepen the relationship between Liberia and Chad. We are committed to sharing a common aspiration for the people and building a future where both countries can thrive side by side,” Foreign Minister Nyanti said. “Liberia is undergoing an ambitious reconstruction process focused on revitalizing the agricultural sector, investing in education, improving infrastructure and stimulating both the private and public sectors of the economy.”
As part of her mission, Foreign Minister Nyanti appealed for Chad’s valuable support for Liberian bids for non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council. The Minister explained that Liberia’s candidacy reflects the country’s commitment to promoting international peace and security, while also amplifying the voices of the nation from the south of the world.
“We believe that securing a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council provides Africa with an opportunity to make meaningful contributions to global governance. With Chad’s support, we can send a strong message of Africa’s strength in stability and development,” Foreign Minister Nyanti said.
In response, President Mahamato Idris Debbie expressed his full support for Liberian bids and highlighted the important responsibility that comes with representing Africa at the UN Security Council.
“Chad supports Liberia’s candidacy because it is important that Africa has a strong voice on global issues. This is not just Liberia, it is about Africa’s voice and its impact on the formation of the world order,” President Debbie said. “Liberia’s bids represent our collective vision for the future and we are totally confident that Liberia will represent Africa’s interests to the Security Council with its dignity and commitment.”

President Debbie also said that non-permanent seats are an important step in rectifying historical injustice related to underestimating Africa in the global governance structure. He emphasized that Africa is undergoing major changes and that the seat represents a key moment when the continent is heard at a global stage.
Both leaders emphasized the importance of cooperation between African countries, particularly in the pursuit of sustainable peace and development. President Debbie also highlighted the common interests of Chad and Liberia, noting that despite the geographical distance between the two countries, they have common goals in areas such as tourism, trade and investment.
“This collaboration will go a long way in ensuring that both countries achieve their own goals and contribute to Africa’s growth and prosperity,” concluded President Debbie.
Foreign Minister Nyanti’s visit marked an important step in strengthening diplomatic relations between Liberia and Chad and strengthening its commitment to cooperate on issues of mutual concern while promoting peace, development and regional cooperation across Africa.
