Boulter will begin his clay court swing on Tuesday when he played Czech Republic Katerina Senior Kova in the Madrid Open First Round.
Briton’s Clay experience is still limited, playing only four top-level main draw matches on the surface.
After winning a BJK Cup singles match in indoor clay in the Netherlands last week and losing a BJK Cup singles match, Boulter went to Alicante. There, his fiancee, Alex de Minaur, has been based for a long time – for training week.
She decided that was a wise option – she continues to manage foot injuries rather than squeeze them at another WTA clay court event before Madrid.
This issue allowed her to play five tournaments this season.
“I want to see girls get taller and higher. [in the rankings]but personally I have my goals and I try to focus on them,” Boulter added.
“For me, you need to try and stay healthy, that’s the most important thing, and rankings handle it themselves.
“Obviously, I fell a bit since last year, but I couldn’t play.
“My level hasn’t gone anywhere. I feel my level is great, so now it’s about keeping myself healthy for the most important tournament.”
