Lithuanian prosecutors say that Russian military intelligence agency Gru was behind the arson attack on Ikea furniture store in the Baltic capital, Vilnius, last year.
Two Ukrainian suspects have been arrested – one in Lithuania and another in Poland.
He said the intermediary investigation established “this is related to military intelligence, security services.”
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tass said Lithuania “confirmed suspicions that Russia’s secret service is responsible for the fires of shopping centres in Vilnius and Warsaw.”
“It’s good to know before negotiations. This is the nature of this condition,” he wrote in X’s post.
Russia has denied repeated allegations that secret services by NATO countries engage in sabotage throughout Europe.
Russia was blamed for a series of parcel fires that targeted European courier companies last July.
Security experts see it as a systematic campaign for a “hybrid war” to undermine European support for Ukraine’s defense against the Russian invasion that began in February 2022.
The arson attack in Vilnius last May caused no casualties, but a similar attack that month destroyed a huge shopping mall in the Polish capital, Warsaw.
Prosecutor Urbelis said the two suspects (both teenagers) agreed to hold a secret meeting in Warsaw and launch a fire in Lithuania and Latvian shops with 10,000 euros ($11,000, £8,400) and BMW’s reward.
