Self-proclaimed prophet shepherd Bushiri, the church leader of the enlightened Christian gathering, and his wife Mary Bushiri, are scheduled to be handed over to South Africa after the Malawian court ruled that the state meets extradition requirements.
The couple was arrested in 2019 for fraud by investors R102 million, and in the case of a shepherd, they raped several female church members.
The controversial duo skipped bail after being arrested in November 2020.
The South African government then asked Malawi to hand over for trial that he had violated rape accusations, bail terms, financial recommendations, and violated the Mediation Services Act, Banking Act, Civil Aviation Act and Immigration Act.
In a statement, the South African government welcomed the ruling as “a significant milestone in international legal cooperation and demonstrates the strength of both countries’ judicial frameworks and diplomatic engagement.”
However, it has been reported that Busiris intends to oppose the verdict. In such cases, the South African government would oppose the appeal.
