A wave of anger across Malawi is being wiped out in preparation for a massive demonstration against the court’s explosive decision to hand over the prophet shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary to South Africa.

Leading the accusations, the Black Economic Empowerment Movement (Mablem) has denounced the verdict as a betrayal of Malawia’s sovereignty, accusing the judiciary of turning a blind eye to South Africa’s persecution, assassination threats and overwhelming evidence of an integrated legal system.

“Death sentence in disguise!”

In a statement on March 12, 2025, Meble Chairman Robert Mukwetheramba did not warn that handing over Busiris would hand them over to the enemy on a silver platter.

“The court effectively signed their death warrant,” declared Mkwezalamba. “This is not justice. This is a set-up! South Africa has already proven its hostility towards Bushiri, and a fair trial is nothing more than a fantasy.”

He added that the decision was spit out in the face of Malawi sovereignty and that he would not see Malawi sitting and throwing it at the wolves.

National protests to shake up the system

In a bold move, Mablem is mobilizing national protests to resist what is called politically motivated extradition. The group vowed to take Bushiri into the streets to protect the rights of Malawians and demand that Bushiri be protected from unfair and dangerous extradition.

“This is greater than Bushiri. This is about all the rights that Malawians are protected by their own country,” Mukwezaramba said. “We won’t be silent. We’re ready to stand up!”

The legal battle is not over

Mablem also urges Bushiri’s legal team to challenge the verdict in every possible way, warning that Malawi should not be bullied by foreign interests.

One thing is certain as pressure is put on the government and the judiciary. This battle has just begun. Malawians are ready to hear their voices!
