“Not an administrative error…but embezzlement within the framework of a system set up to assist parties” – Judge
Through Reuters, we’ve given the judge a little more detail about his explanation of the conviction.
The court found Le Pen, eight other people who were then EU lawmakers, and 12 parliamentary assistants who committed crimes of embezzling EU funds. The defendants were not accused of putting the money in their pocket, but rather of using EU funds for the benefit of their party.
Justice Bénédicte Perthuis said, “It was established that all these people were actually working for the party, that their (EU) lawmakers had not given them any work.”
“The investigation also showed that these are not administrative errors… but embezzlement within the framework of the system introduced to reduce costs for parties.”
Sitting in the front row in court, Le Pen sometimes shook his head slightly from right to left, showing “no” while listening to the judge.
Every day, Libération finds evidence of more than 40 fictitious contracts in the general court “over 12 years,” adding that the total amount will be “over 4.6 million euros.”

We are getting the first line from the Paris courts that Marine Le Pen and eight MEPs were found guilty of embezzling EU funds.
However, the French media say their rulings will be reported separately, so they will need to wait a little longer for more details to come out of the court.

In his opening remarks reported by various French media outlets, Judge Benedictie de Perteis warned that the verdict would “be a little longer” as he “gives a lot of explanations about the decision that he has made.”
While acknowledging the broader importance of litigation, including the political process, she argued that the court “goes as usual.”
