Matt Petgrave – A hockey player arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with the death of former NHL pro Adam Johnson in 2023 will not face criminal charges… UK officials said this week.
The Crown Prosecutor’s Office announced its decision on Tuesday… After a thorough police investigation, it chose not to pursue the charges.
“We concluded that we will not be charged because there is no realistic prospect of a conviction for the crime. Our thoughts remain in Adam Johnson’s family and friends,” CPS said.
It’s been a year and a half since Johnson tragically passed away during a hockey game. The former Pittsburgh Penguin, a member of the then Nottingham Panthers, skated around his neck as he climbed onto the ice.
He was treated quickly…but succumbed to his injuries.
“Everyone at the club, including players, staff, management and ownership, is heartbroken with news that Adam has passed away,” Johnson’s team at the time called the issue a “freak accident.”
Petgrave, who was never publicly named as a suspect by police, was told to remain in the country while the extensive process unfolds… His bail has been extended eight times.
Before going abroad, Johnson played for the Penguins during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. He scored goals and scored three assists in 13 games.
“Adam will always be part of the Penguin family, and it was our honor to see him realize his dream of playing in the National Hockey League,” the team said.
