Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Morocco Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita today. The secretary and the foreign minister confirmed a strong US-Morocco partnership in promoting peace and security under the leadership of President Trump and King Mohamed VI. They discussed cooperation to promote shared local priorities, including building on Abraham’s agreement and expanding commercial cooperation to benefit both Americans and Moroccans. The secretary reiterated President Trump’s clear position that Hamas must release all hostages immediately, and he praised Moroccan leadership for contributing to a better tomorrow for Israelis, Palestinians and people in all regions.
The secretary reiterated that the United States recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over the western Sahara and supports Morocco’s serious, reliable and realistic autonomy proposal as the sole basis for a fair and lasting solution to the conflict. The United States continues to believe that true autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only viable solution. The secretary reaffirmed that President Trump urged parties to engage in the debate without delay in negotiating mutually acceptable solutions, using Morocco’s autonomy proposal as a sole framework. The secretary pointed out that the United States will promote progress towards this end.
