OPUWO – Chief James Nudura, commander of Namibian police in the Kunen area, urged drivers and pedestrians to refrain from crossing flooded rivers after the intense downpours recorded here in the past three weeks.
Speaking to Pickup on Wednesday, he highlighted the dangers of trying to cross or navigate the flooded river, noting that the Kunen River is one of the most dangerous.
“As we all know, this area continues to suffer heavy rain. Therefore, all drivers and pedestrians should avoid crossing flooded rivers at all costs. These rivers are extremely dangerous and pose a great threat to all of us.
Most roads in the area are unable to pass due to flooded rivers.
“Most roads are not accessible on foot or on vehicles. As we know, there are no effective bridges at many of our river intersections, so we have to wait until the water level is low before anyone can try to cross,” Nderura repeated.
Except for two deaths over the weekend from his own deaths at Opuwo and Farm Lekkerwater, the commissioner said the area has not recorded any incidents of drowning in the past two days.
Rivers reportedly heavily flooded in the area include Okanwati, Etanga, Oud, Onunglua and Odjiuhaha. Others include stretches between the Sesfontein and Omao rivers, particularly between Epupa and Onunglua.
