Retiring President Nangolo Mbumba pays tribute to Namibian women for reaching the pinnacle of power following the election of Netumbo Nandi Nddaitova independence in 2015 as the country’s first female president.

Nandi-Ndaitwah received the symbol of power on Friday, marking a new chapter as the first elected female president in southern Africa, and taking second place on the continent after Liberia’s Ellen Johnson Sirleef.

Mbumba said goodbye to the provincial chief, former head of state, diplomatic community and senior officials, saying he left the happy man after leading the country, which reached almost 50/50 representatives in Congress.

This was clearly mentioned by the country’s political parties following the Zebra style to balance gender equality in political status. Zebra style is an important component of South African Development Community Policy to reach gender parity in political status.

“The results of these efforts have been reflected in one of the most valuable institutions of our democracy, and are close to a 50/50 expression between men and women,” Mbumba said.

He added: “Friday, March 21st represents the pinnacle of our country’s efforts to ensure that women in Namibia are empowered. Our Namibian women and girls will break the glass ceiling by ascending to the highest hierarchy of state power.”

“I’ve always served as vice president under my brother. He treated me very well, as a friend and equal. We always thought we would leave our state home as president and vice president and enter retirement,” Mbumba told the guest.

He said he would leave with a heavy heart after President Hage Geingob, who passed away last February. Mbumba described Jingob as his brother, comrade and friend.

“Most unfortunately, I am the only one who can say goodbye to me today.

My destiny to say goodbye to the state house on behalf of President Jingob, not just for me,” he said.

Mbumba said he thanked the warmth and support that spread to him by the Namibians after he took over after Gingob’s death.

He added that Namibians welcomed him without question and that his tenure was fun and challenging, but that he achieved his goal of completing Geingob’s term.
