There are 443 foreign prisoners serving sentences at Namibia correctional facilities nationwide, with 12 awaiting trial.
This was revealed by Rafael Hamniera, head of the Namibian Correctional Services (NCS). Hamunyela was answering a question New Era had submitted. He showed that crimes committed include murder, attempted murder, immigration crime, rape, robbery, inventory theft, fraud, illegal possession of a firearm, lure, destruction of a home, illegal hunting and possession of drugs.
“The category of inmates who are foreigners will only be deported after they serve their sentence,” he said.
Additionally, Hamniera said those deported include prisoners who committed immigration crimes.
“These prisoners will be handed over to the immigration department for deportation. Those who have legal time in Namibia and who do not have a valid passport upon release will be handed over to immigrants for deportation to their country of origin.
