The New York Rangers continued to restructure their roster on Tuesday night, dealing with veteran defensive man Kandre Miller for the Carolina Hurricanes, the club announced.
In return, the Metropolitan division rival Hurricane sent picks for the first and second round of 2026 to New York. First rounders are the top ten protected, with better ordering Carolina, or Dallas Star ordering. New York also added blue line depth to the contract by including Scott Morrow (22), who scored one goal and six points in the Hurricane last season. Moreau is one of Carolina’s top prospects, scoring 39 points in 52 AHL games last season.
As part of the deal, Carolina secured 21 minutes of ice time last season, 21 minutes of its ice rating and negotiated a $60 million contract extension with Miller. The contract has an average annual average annual value of $7.5 million.
Miller, 25, who played at a university in Wisconsin, was a restricted free agent qualifying for a field offer sheet. Sources say the Rangers weren’t ready to commit to the mirror in the long run and decided to go in a different direction. Miller has scored 36 goals and 132 points in his NHL career, all with New York. He was the Rangers’ first round pick in 2018.
“K’Andre is a defender I think is a very strong fit in the way we play,” Hurricanes general manager Eric Talski said in a Carolina news release. “He’s just approaching his prime and we’re sure he’ll excel in hurricane sweaters.”

The move continues the new look of the Rangers’ blue line, particularly after the club signed a seven-year, $49 million contract with veteran Vladislav Gavlikov. Sources say the Rangers imagine Gabrikov playing alongside Adam Fox in the Rangers’ top pairing. Shutdown defender Gabrikov is a player the Rangers have been targeting for a while.
In Carolina, Jaccob Slavin has a headlining defenseman, but the group is reissuing that is unlikely to return veterans Brent Burns and Dmitry Orlov.
“They have such a fast team,” Miller said on a Zoom call with a reporter on Wednesday. “They go up and down the ice with fast movements and do everything as a team. It’s a fun group to watch and they’ve had a lot of success lately. So I’m excited to be in that style of game and they have a great team out there.”
Also on Tuesday, the Rangers agreed to sign 23-year-old Will Cuylle, a restricted free agent forward, on a two-year contract extension, the club announced.
Meanwhile, the Hurricane continues to shake up hugely under the Tarskis. Carolina is looking to continue to break through regular season success, including a seven-year playoff streak, including three trips to the Eastern Conference Finals. Sources say the cane was one of the teams in discussions with the remaining free agent Nikolaj Ehlers on Tuesday.
