Russia’s Alex Ovechkin became the National Hockey League’s highest scorer by achieving his 895th career goal to surpass the legendary Wayne Gretzky’s 31st year mark.
Gretzky, a Canadian Hall of Fame, broke a record held earlier in 1994 by his fellow countryman Gordy Howe.
Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals scored a historic goal against New York Islanders on Sunday, with Gretzky present.
The game was paused for almost 20 minutes as players and audiences acknowledged the historic moment.
Ovechkin was attended by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and four-time Stanley Cup winner Greetzky. [so] The 895 is quite special.
“They say the records are made to break, but I don’t know who will achieve any further goals.”
Ovechkin celebrated with his teammates, completed the arena rap, and then shook hands with the islander opponent before his family joined.
“What a moment for hockey, what a moment for me,” Ovechkin said.
“Finally no one is going to ask me about ‘You’re going to do that’. That’s finished now. ”
This achievement was also celebrated in the hometown of Moscow-born Ovechkin, and in people posted on social media by the Russian Olympic Committee and the economic envoy of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Kiril Dmitriev.
His feat is even more noteworthy considering his season was interrupted for several weeks when he broke his leg in November.
Ovechkin joined Gretzky on Friday.
