The Vancouver Canucks were the regular season champions in the Pacific division from 2023-24, winning a first-round playoff matchup with the Nashville Predators. The Calgary Flames scored 17 points from wildcard spots last season, trading Jacob Markstrom, Noah Hanifin, Elias Lindholm, Nikita Zadorov and Chris Tanev during the last season and offseason.

You might say that the expectations were different between the two clubs before the season. This is backed up by a total over/under of preseason points from ESPN BET. Canucks is listed at 99.5 and flame is at 81.5

Nevertheless, the two Western Canadian teams are playing in the wild card spots of the final Western Conference just a month past the season. On Wednesday night they will face off in Calgary (9pm, ESPN+). Heading into the game, Calgary has 70 points and 24 regulations wins in 63 games, while Vancouver has 69 and 23-63. This is a final head-to-head match between the clubs.

Beyond Wednesday of the remaining games for the Flames, 10 out of 18 are opposed to teams in playoff positions. For the Canucks, that’s nine out of the last 17.

Stathletes predicts they will finish the flame at that coveted wildcard position at 89.6 points. Vancouver is forecast at 88.1 points, behind Calgary, the St. Louis Blues and the Utah Hockey Club.

Given the tight margins, every game is important, especially against your fellow wildcard bubble teams.

There will be plenty of runways until the final day of the April 17th season. We’ll help you track everything with the NHL Playoff Watch. As you cross the final stretch, we will provide details of all the playoff races along with teams jogging for a position in the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery.

The NHL uses draft lottery to determine the order of the first round, so teams finishing at the last place are not guaranteed to choose No. 1. As of 2021, teams can raise up to 10 spots if they win the lottery, so only 11 teams are eligible for the first place pick. Click here to learn more about the process. Matthew Schaefer, the defender of OHL’s Erie Otters, is number one on the draft board.
