The African Development Bank and Ethiopian Airlines Group have signed a letter aimed at developing the planned abuse international airport project of East African countries.

The $7.8 billion project aims to address increased passenger and cargo demand, strengthen Ethiopia’s position as a major aviation hub and stimulate the region’s economic growth.

The CEO of Ethiopian Airlines group Mesfin Tasew Bekele recently signed at Abidjan’s bank headquarters with Nnenna Nwabufo, vice president of regional development, integration and business delivery at the African Development Bank.

The new world-class international airport is located in Bischoffutu, approximately 40 km from the current Addis Abababore International Airport.

The new Abusera International Airport complements Ethiopia’s recently expanded Bole International Airport. This is expected to soon reach a passenger capacity limit of 25 million people per year. The new infrastructure will strengthen Ethiopian Airlines’ role in improving intra-African connectivity by enabling broader and more efficient networks and enhancing connectivity between Africa and the world.

In a meeting with the Ethiopian delegation, Dr Akinoumi Adesina, president of the African Development Bank Group, said, “I am a great friend of Ethiopia, and of course, the Ethiopian airline is Africa’s pride and symbol of excellence and revival.

“The African Development Bank is fully committed to supporting this transformative flagship project, enhancing aviation leadership and economic integration on the continent.”

Ethiopian Finance Minister Ahmed Schaid said: “Today’s signature of the intent of the new mega airport development project is yet another evidence of AFDB’s commitment to supporting Ethiopia’s ambitious flagship air transport project.

Ethiopian Airlines Group, Africa’s largest and most successful airline, is working on an ambitious 2035 growth strategy. This emphasizes network expansion, infrastructure development and human capital investment to increase global competitiveness.
