The Independent National Election Commission (INEC) has been recognized by Chatham House Group, a young professional socio-political think tank in Kogi State for its commitment to transparency, justice and constitutional fidelity in Nigeria’s election process.
The acclaim follows the recent decision by INEC to strike a petition for a recall of Sen. Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central in the Nigerian Senate.
In a statement signed by group convener Abdulrahman Zulqarnien Ozovehe, Chatham House Group praised INEC’s “decisive and impartial decision” to dismiss what is called an unfounded petition.
According to the group, the actions of the electoral body reflect the constitutional requirements, particularly the independence and compliance of Section 69(a) of the 1999 constitution, and outlines the legal framework for initiating the recall process.
“This decision is a bold testimony of INEC’s commitment to supporting the principles of justice, transparency and constitutional validity in the democratic process in Nigeria,” the statement read.
The group further emphasized that the INEC decision not only free protection of the duties given to Senator Akpoti-uduaghan, but also strengthens the importance of protecting democratic tools from potential misuse.
Describing Nigeria as a country still developing democratic institutions, Chatham House Group has highlighted the essential role of independent bodies like INEC in ensuring the integrity of the electoral system. “The committee’s decision is a victory over democracy and a reminder that our election process must be guided by fairness, legality and the collective interests of the people,” the statement added.

In response to the ongoing demand for a new recall process by the unnamed group, the Chatham House Group appealed to actions that could destabilise the political landscape of Kogi State. The group called on citizens to remain vigilant and discerning, and encouraged all stakeholders to adhere to the principles of democracy.
The statement also reportedly received by a large number of supporters in Sen. Akpoti Uduagan’s recent homecoming event, Okehi Local Government Area. According to the group, continued support from her constituency was shown.
The Chatham House Group has repeatedly urged those who respect the election commission’s decision and instead pursue recalls to focus on constructive engagement.
The group concluded by reaffirming its commitment to promoting justice, transparency and democratic values across Kogi State and Nigeria.
