Nigeria: Court hearing light empty case against Akpoti-Udughan, Akpabio, on alleged violation of order

The court said it would hear a petty charge against Mrs. Akpoti-uduaghan about alleged court orders for similar violations and violations of another order against Mr Akpabio.

The Federal High Court in Abuja will hear the mild emptying charges filed by Senate President Gods Will Akpabio against suspended Central Senator Kogi Natasha Akpoti Udaghan against a social media suspect who violated the order of the gags.

Judge Binta Nyako, who postponed the matter until noon Tuesday, said he would first hear of the previous mild-empt charges filed by Akpoti Yudaghan against the previous court order against Akpabio, the Senate and others.

“I also want a copy of the Senate rules,” the judge said.

Nigeria News Agency (NAN) reports that Mrs Nyako has detained all parties to a lawsuit filed on April 4 when Mrs Akpoti-Udughan allowed media interviews and participated in social media posts on the subject before the court.

The development is said to have been from one media station to another following a complaint by Akpabio’s lawyer, Senior Advocate in Nigeria (SAN), Kehinde Ogunwumiju, who is the lawyer for Akpabio, and is allowing a press interview on issues related to the case.

However, later last month, Mrs. Akpoti-Natasha laughed at Akpabio and occupied a satirical apology posted on her official Facebook page.

In the letter, Mrs. Akpoti-uduaghan apologized for the irony in the Senate about “crimes that preserve dignity and self-esteem.”

She said that success in the Senate under Akpabio’s leadership appears to rely on compliance with personal demands rather than merit.

“It is the deepest irony and greatest theatrical regret that softens this apology for the tragic crime of having dignity and self-esteem in your most highly regarded being,” she wrote.

In the aftermath of the Post, Akpabio’s legal team filed an application in court, accusing Akpoti Natasha of violating an interview and a gag order banning such social media posting.

However, Mrs. Akpoti-Uduaghan, who has been suspended from the Senate for six months on alleged misconduct that arose from an argument with Akpabio in February, rebutted the application and urged the court to dismiss it.

The Senator’s legal team led by Jubril Okutepa argued that her post was not violating the court order and instead was a way to protest allegations of unfair suspension from the Senate. They also wrote that the Senate president’s allegations were attempts to harass and intimidate her by expressing herself.

In the early stages of the case, Mrs. Akpoti Uduahhan filed a mild empty charge against Mr Akpabio and the other defendants for suspending her in violation of an order given by former chairman judge Obiola Eguuatu. Her suspension by the Senate violated a restraining order asking her to suspend disciplinary action awaiting her hearing and decision.

The senator who accused Akpabio of sexual harassment (accusations he rejected) sued the NASS clerk, Akpabio, the Senate, Neda Imasuem, and the chairman of the Senate Committee of Ethics, Privilege and Conduct.
