Nigeria has officially expressed interest in bidding for Commonwealth Games in 2030, with Abuja poised to become a host city.
This announcement follows confirmation by the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) and is known to have successfully closed the March 28th deadline for submitting interest.
NOC spokesman Tony Nezianya said in a statement released Monday that the next step in the bidding process depends on getting formal support from the federal government.
“The Nigerian bid presents a unique opportunity to showcase our development, raise our global position and stimulate the culture of sports,” Neziania said, emphasizing the importance of hosting such events not only for sports but for the pride of the people.
The last major multisport event hosted by Nigeria was the 2003 African Games held in Abuja. The experience gained from that event provides a strong foundation for the potential to effectively organize large international competition in Nigeria.
The proposed bid is aimed at promoting investment in sports infrastructure, particularly in Abuja. This can stimulate the local sports economy and improve facilities for future generations. Hosting Commonwealth Games could potentially catalyze the construction and upgrade of sports venues, transportation systems and accommodations, bringing lasting benefits to both the sports community and the general public.
Nezianya also noted that the influx of tourists would support local businesses and create jobs, particularly in the hospitality sector, focusing on the potential for a great economic boost. Preparation for such events creates many employment opportunities that encourage local businesses and skills development, particularly in event management and construction.
Additionally, the game is expected to inspire a new generation of athletes and provide excellent motivation and resources in the sports field. This bid not only places hosting, but also positions Nigeria as a country that values athleticism and promotes talent.
According to a NOC statement, the announcement coincides with a broader schedule of sporting events, including the ANOCA School Sports game in Algeria this July, and the upcoming Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow, Scotland in March 2026.
