The long-awaited cultural celebration will take place on Easter Sunday, April 20th
The Lagos State Government, in collaboration with the Brazilian Consulate in Lagos and Robert Taylor Media, has announced the revival of the Lagos Fanti Carnival through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
The much-anticipated cultural celebration will take place on Easter on Sunday, April 20th from 10am to 10pm at the Memorial Arcade in Tafawabalewa Square on Lagos Island.
First held in the second half of the 19th century by Yoruba Afro-Brazilian returnees, the Lagos Fanti Carnival continues to be one of the city’s most precious cultural traditions.
Rooted in the rhythm of the samba, Catholic influences and a blend of street theatres, it reflects the resilience and creativity of the community that reconstructs its identity after the transatlantic slave trade.
Sharing history
At a press conference held at the Brazilian Consulate, Talk Benson Wawinka, a committee member of Lagos Tourism, Arts and Culture, described the carnival as a powerful expression of shared history and identity.
“The Lagos Fanti Carnival is more than a sight. It is a vibrant, living expression of our collective history,” she said.
“This is a celebration of the rhythm of the samba, Catholic influence, and the resilience, identity and creative spirit of the Afro-Brazilian returnees who have blew the street performance.
She highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to preserving Lagos heritage through initiatives such as the city-wide heritage plaque program.
The QR code embedded plaque aims to preserve and share the narratives of important sites and traditions that have shaped the city’s cultural landscape.
Mrs. Benson Wawinka also praised Governor Babazide Sanur Or for her continued support.
“The revival of Lagos Fanti Carnival is a testament to the governor’s lasting commitment to celebrate our legacy and promote inclusive cultural development. His leadership has helped us relocate Lagos as a global cultural hub,” she said.
Brazilian Consul General Manuel Inocencio del Leda Santos Jr. strengthened the deep historic ties between Nigeria and Brazil.
“Our two countries are bound by shared history, culture, cuisine and spirit. Fanti Carnival is a powerful reminder that the bond between Brazil and Nigeria is more than just history. We have an immeasurable promise for future cooperation, such as trade, education and technology,” he said.
He added that Yoruba’s cultural influences are visible in Brazilian cuisine and spiritual traditions.
“There’s no doubt that Brazilians can feel completely home in Lagos.”
Icongeo city planning expert Peter Richie has released an official parade route and historical map showing the importance of Brazilian dormitories in Lagos.
“As we evolve this heritage celebration, we must ensure it is a tool for inclusion, education and community pride,” he said.
Kola Peregrino, president of the Brazilian Descendent Association, praised the government’s efforts and reaffirmed the group’s commitment to cultural conservation and consciousness.

Major attractions
This year’s Carnival features three important attractions: Afro-Brazil’s food showcase, heritage art exhibitions and a grand parade. Each element combines traditional heritage with contemporary Lagos creativity, including music, fashion, dance, storytelling, and cooking.
The event will attract more than 10,000 face-to-face attendees and over 50,000 livestream viewers, and will generate over 2 million digital impressions worldwide. It also highlights the energy and talent of young people, designers, dancers, musicians and artists in Lagos.
During the event preparation stage, organizers will have a behind-the-scenes glimpse into rehearsals, costume creation and community gatherings.
