Premium Times reported how a gas tanker exploded in Magia Town, the Taura Local Government Area on October 14th last year.
Six months after the gas tanker explosion in Zigawa, the state government says those who have pledged financial support to the victims have not yet redeemed the pledge.
The tanker exploded in Magiatown, Taura Local Government Area on October 14th last year.
A panel established by the state government to investigate the incident said 209 people had been killed and 99 people were injured in the accident.
On Tuesday, government spokesman Sagir Ahmed told reporters that the government had redeemed N839,686,580 payments while awaiting the rest of the pledge. He said he was pledged to over N1.6 billion, but redeemed to over N839 million.
Ahmed said redeemed pledges from individuals, groups, corporate organisations and institutions will be distributed to 210 victims, including those injured and the families of the deceased.
“When the incident occurred, various individuals came and sympathized, and so many pledges were made.
“It’s very easy to announce donations. For some, it’s impossible to even get them. Ahmed said the delay was the result.
Officials said Bala Ibrahim, a committee chaired by the state government’s secretary, is tasked with following up with those who have not yet redeemed their pledge.
However, he did not name anyone who still did not meet their pledge.
However, the Premium Times understand that 19 Northern Province governments have each committed to donating 50 million, while Kano and Sokoto each donated N 100 million.
The donation was announced by Gombe Governor Inuwa Yahaya, chairman of the Northern Nigeria Governor’s Forum.
The Dangote Foundation also donated N1 million to each family, losing N250,000 to each of the injured victims. Dangote Group President Alico Dangote has announced his donation at the Presidential Lodge in the Government House of Dutze.
The Emeka Offor Foundation also donated N150 million, while members of the House announced N100 million.
Several other individuals, including 2023 Labour presidential candidate Peter Obi, have also pledged to donate various amounts.
