Bayo Ojulari first joined Shell in November 1991 as a semi-production engineer at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC).
President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday dismissed the board of directors of the national oil company NNPC, which includes group chief executive officer (GCED), Mele Kyari and board chairman Pius Akinyelure.
The president has also approved Bayo Bashir Ojulari as the new GCEO of NNPC.
Odurari is an energy expert who describes himself as a “proven business leader in the global energy sector.”
According to his LinkedIn profile, he worked full-time at Global Oil Giant Shell for over 24 years, and in November 2015 became Managing Director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO).
His LinkedIn profile shows that he first joined Shell as a semi-production engineer at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in November 1991 after leaving Elf Petroleum Nigeria as a field and process engineer. He worked as a new graduate with Elf from September 1989 to October 1991.
Mr. Odurari joined the Elves after graduating from Ahmadubero University in Zaria, where he studied mechanical engineering between 1985 and 1989.
After joining Shell in 1991, he became a member of the integrated research team at Shell’s headquarters in the Netherlands in June 1994.
Between April 1997 and November 1999, he was SPDC Nigeria’s Head Planning Economics and Budget Compilation, from which he became the Oman Shell’s asset leader and head production engineer from December 1999 to September 2003.
He became a sub-Saharan Africa regional planner at Shell’s headquarters in October 2003 and established himself until December 2004.
From January 2005 to October 2008, he was the manager of corporate planning and strategy at SPDC Nigeria, and during that time he held his position as Asset Production Engineer for a short time from November 2006 to March 2007.
In Shell, he remained in Nigeria since then, becoming Manager, Asset Development (Astroin and Shallow Water) SPDC Nigeria from October 2008 to October 2010.
From January 2010 to October 2015, he was the Development Director for SPDC Nigeria, then from November 2015 to July 2021, he became the managing director of SNEPCO and left the company.
He founded BAT Advisory and Energy Company Nigeria Ltd in September 2021 and served as chairman of the Board. One of the company’s main tasks was to provide consulting services to companies in the oil and gas/energy sector.
He was appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Renaissance Africa Energy Company in January 2024. He announced his appointment at Renaissance Africa, which was linked about a week ago, saying, “It’s been a while since I started my role as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Office at Renaissance Africa Energy Company, and I wanted to share this update with everyone.”

He joined the Renaissance when the company was signing up for a purchase of shell assets in Nigeria.
“The Renaissance currently controls a 30% stake in SPDC’s SPDC JV, a non-integrated joint venture with government-owned National Petroleum Corporation (55%), Total Exploration and Production Nigeria Ltd (10%), and AGIP Energy and Natural Resources (Nigeria) Limited (5%),” the announcement.
Odurali is currently heading NNPC, Nigeria’s leading oil and gas company. He also joined NNPC when his former company Shell announced its sale from its Nigerian business, particularly its land business in the oil-rich Niger Delta.
The oil and gas expert is expected to bring his experience to the operation of NNPC.
“President Tinubu has also handed the new board an immediate plan of action, conducting a strategic portfolio review of NNPC operations and joint venture assets to ensure alignment with value maximization targets,” Presidential spokesman Onanuga wrote in a statement Wednesday announcing the new appointment.
