Thai authorities have declared a state of emergency in Bangkok, Prime Minister Paetong Tarun Sinawatra said on Friday after the city was hit by a major earthquake centered on Myanmar.
Damage was reported to the Bangkok building after a shaking of 7.7 magnitude. This includes 30-storey construction skyscrapers that collapsed in the northern part of the city.

The strong earthquake in Myanmar has damaged many skyscrapers in Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, the governor said on Friday.
Chadchart Sittimunt said the number of damaged buildings is not yet known and inspections are underway. He urged people to be cautious, Reuters reported.

Dozens of workers have been rescued from under the rooftop rubs of the skyscraper, they added.

In Myanmar, a team of French Press (AFP) journalists were at the National Museum in Nepidau when the earthquake struck.
The AFP team reported that the pieces fell from the ceiling as the building began to shake. They said uniformed staff members ran outside, shaking and tears cried, and others were grabbing their phones to try and contact their loved ones.
The nearby road was succumbed to by trembling and broke, and the route to one of the city’s largest hospitals was blocked by traffic. Authorities said the hospital was a “large casualty area” after the earthquake.
In the 1,000-bed hospital, the injured were being treated on the streets outside.

Police and doctors say 43 animals were trapped as Bangkok’s skyscraper collapsed
The 30-storey skyscraper under construction for government offices has collapsed in Bangkok, locking in 43 workers, police and hygienists said after the city was shaken by a strong earthquake.
According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), the building north of the Thai capital was reduced to rub tiles and twisted metal tangles a few seconds after an adjacent Myanmar’s 7.7 magnitude earthquake.

Witnesses in Bangkok told Reuters that people were running off into the streets in panic, many of whom had escaped hotel guests dressed in bathrobes and swimming outfits.
One office tower in downtown Bangkok shook left and right for at least two minutes, with doors and windows squealing loudly. Hundreds of employees submitted via emergency stairs.
Outside, hundreds gathered in the afternoon sun, but medical kit staff found office chairs for those shocked, Reuters reported.

Police say the Bangkok skyscraper collapsed after an earthquake of 7.7 size at noon in Thailand and adjacent Myanmar on Friday, with the possibility of casualties still unknown.
According to the Associated Press (AP), a dramatic video is circulating on social media, showing a multistory building showing a crane lying in a cloud of dust at the top.
Police told the Associated Press that they were responding to a scene near Bangkok’s popular Chatuchak market and had no immediate information on how many workers were on the scene at the time of the collapse.

One Mandalay witness told Reuters:
Everything started to shake and we all ran away from home.
I witnessed a five-storey building collapse in front of me. Everyone in my town is out on the road and no one dares to return to the building. ”
Witnesses contacted by Yangon Reuters said many people had fled Myanmar’s largest city building.

An official from the Myanmar Fire Station told Reuters:
We launched a search and went around Yangon to check for victims and damages. So far, we still have no information. ”
Reuters reports that a social media post from Mandalay, Myanmar’s ancient royal capital, in the heart of the Buddhist centre, showed crumbling buildings and debris scattered across the city’s streets. However, Reuters could not immediately confirm the post.

In Thailand, there were no immediate reports of victims, but emergency meetings were called to assess the effects of the tremors, and no immediate reports of victims.
Thailand’s Disaster Prevention Bureau said the earthquake was felt in almost every part of the country.
The Greater Bangkok area has over 17 million people, many of whom live in high-rise apartments.

As mentioned earlier, the epicenter of the earthquake was in central Myanmar, about 30 miles (50 km) east of Mony city.
The AP says in the capital, Napidau, the earthquake has destroyed religious shrines, sending parts of the land and some homes.
Further reports of damages from Myanmar, which is being caught up in the civil war, were not immediately available.

Strong and shallow earthquakes are hit by Myanmar and nearby Thailand
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Myanmar.
The USGS said Friday’s tremble was shallow, at the depths of the epicenter near the central city of Mandalay, about 50 km (30 miles) east of Mony city.
After the 2021 coup, there were no immediate reports of damage caused by the earthquake in Myanmar, which is in chaotic state.
Surprised residents of densely populated central Bangkok poured high-rise apartments and hotels. The Greater Bangkok area has over 17 million people, many of whom live in high-rise apartments.
The trembling was strong enough to send the slopes of water out of the pool as the trembling shaking.
“I heard that, I was sleeping at home, I ran as much as I could from the building in my pyjamas,” Duang Jai, a resident of Chiang Mai, a popular tourist town in northern Thailand, told AFP.
