Oscar Piastri has signed a new contract with McLaren, which the team says will protect them “in the long term.”
The 23-year-old Australian, who won two Grand Puces on his way to fourth in the World Championships in his second season in Formula 1 last year, was already signed until the end of 2026.
Piastri’s results, coupled with teammate Lando Norris’ second position in the driver’s championship, secured the McLaren constructor title for the first time since 1998.
Zac Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing, said: “Not only is Oscar an incredibly talented driver, but his work ethic and cultural fit within the team made it easier to extend his time with Papaya.
“We have the best driver lineup on the grid. Over the past two seasons we’ve seen how much of the assets are for the Oscar team and are on track.
“He was absolutely basic in addition to our legacy at the 2024 Constructors Championship last season, so we continue to fight together for the World Championships, so we look forward to what we can do in the future.”
Piastri states: “It’s a great feeling to know that I’m part of McLaren’s long-term vision. When I signed it in 2022, the team had a belief in me, and the journey that has taken place over the past two seasons to bring McLaren back to the top of the sport has been incredible.
“McLaren has a lot of talented and special people who helped me become a Formula 1 race winner at a very early stage in my career, so I am extremely proud to continue to represent this legendary team for years to come.”
McLaren’s statement was intentionally vague about the exact length of Piastri’s contract, but coupled with his previous contracts, the language of the release suggests that he is committed to the team until at least the end of 2028.
Norris signed a new contract last year, saying the team would commit to McLaren until at least the end of 2026.
Team Principal Andrea Stella and technical director of aircraft science Peter Prochlorow recently signed a long contract with McLaren.
Stella said Piastri’s new contract is “a symbol of our belief and trust in him as a driver.”
The Italian added:
“Along with Rand, we have something that needs to be locked up in the long term to continue moving forward.”
