Railway Minister Peter Hendy Lord reported himself to police after being found using a mobile phone while driving a vintage route master bus in London during a charity tour.
A former transporter for London committee members apologised for what was said to be “false judgment” after seeing him text him behind the two-storey wheels last month.
He was reported to Metropolitan Police on March 31 by a passenger who took part in the tour three days ago. It is understood that Pier contacted friends about prostate cancer testing during the event in order to support the railroad family charity.
A Hendy spokesperson said: “Last month, Peter Hendy used his phone while driving. We apologized completely for this wrong decision and contacted the police.”
Metropolitan Police confirmed that the case was first closed due to lack of evidence, but later resumed after Lord Hendy admitted to using his cell phone behind the wheel. He is expected to receive six points on his driver’s license and fine.
The organizers of the railway family fundraiser said they had not received any formal complaints at the time of the incident.
They stated: “Since then, organizers have only had conversations from the complainant in the form of a text message they sent on April 2.
“Railway Family Fundraising is run by railway experts, and everyone works with regulations on safe jobs and regulations and safe practices. None of us advocates or tolerate dangerous practices. But we repeat that we are not aware of the whole situation.
“The organizers regret the positive and enjoyable event being concluded like this and would like to thank Lord Hendy for his support in our event and fundraising.”
