Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Siorak has resigned, and his Social Democrats are due to leave the government after a right-wing nationalist candidate wins in the first round of the presidential election.
Euroskeptic George Simion, who has pledged to put Romania in first place, is expected to win a leaked vote on May 18th, winning 40.9% of Sunday’s vote.
He faces liberal Bucharest mayor Nicoa Dan, who has slightly defeated the Social Democrat (PSD) candidate.
Ciolacu told party supporters that the coalition failed to achieve its objectives and “suggests that the PSD leave this coalition as it is not reliable after the Romanian vote.”
His party, which was in power only in the Pro-eu coalition after the election on December 1, 2024, attracted a third of the vote along with two other groups of George Simion.
Simion’s victory was driven primarily by a general frustration over the abolition of the presidential election late last year. His chances of success on May 18 are nervously waiting in the European capital and Kiev. He says he wants a strong, sovereign state of EU.
Ciolacu is currently planning to submit his resignation to interim president Ilie Bolojan.
Borojean himself took on the role of interim president in February last year due to the scandal surrounding the abolition of the presidential vote.
