Russian airstrikes in prisons in the frontline region of southeastern Ukraine have killed 16 people and injured more than 30 people, Ukrainian officials said.
The overnight attack in Zaporidia also damaged surrounding homes, said Ivan Fedorov, a local leader. Russian forces have launched eight strikes using a high-explosive aerial glide bomb, he added.
Andri Yamak, the Ukrainian president’s chief of staff, has accused the strike of Russia of “another war crime.”
Zaporizhzhia is one of four eastern regions of Ukraine that Russia claims to have annexed since 2022, but the region is primarily under Ukraine’s control.
Ivan Fedorov said the building in one of Zaporizhzhia’s prisons was destroyed and without detailing where he was in the area.
The Russian military has frequently targeted Zaporidia since the start of a full-scale Ukraine invasion in 2022.
The Ukrainian human rights commissioner said attacking prisons was a serious violation of humanitarian law as people in detention have not lost their rights to life and protection.
US President Donald Trump issued the tough Ultimate on Monday to Moscow, warning that Russia has “about 10 or 12 days” to agree to a ceasefire or face-clearing sanctions. During his visit to Scotland, Trump told reporters “I’ll probably announce it tonight or tomorrow,” adding, “There’s no reason to wait if you know what the answer is.”
At the beginning of July, Trump set a 50-day deadline for the Kremlin to reach the armistice with Kyiv or risky economic punishment, but the warning has not stopped the barrage of Russian strikes.
In the Dnipropetrovsk region of eastern Ukraine, more casualties were found in missile and drone attacks late Monday.
Two people have been killed and five injured in the strike in the industrial city of Kamianke, according to regional head Serhiy Raisac.
Another person was killed and several others were injured in the Sinernikivsky area, but a 75-year-old woman was killed and a 68-year-old man was injured when he was attacked in the village late Monday.
The wave of attack came when Russia was pushed deep into the Ukrainian territory of Dnipropetrovsk.
Over the weekend, Moscow said that its forces captured the village of Marievka several weeks after it acquired its first village in the area. Ukraine rejected Russia’s claim.
Meanwhile, in Russia, officials said Ukraine fired dozens of drones overnight in southern Rostov, killing one in a car in the town of Sarsk and setting a freight train on fire.
Another person was reportedly killed in a car in the border area of Belgorod, and his wife was injured.
