Rwanda: Disaster caused by heavy rain kills 52 people in 16 days

So far, 800 families living in high-risk areas have been relocated and shelters are currently being provided.

The disaster caused by heavy rain killed 52 people from April 1st to April 16th, according to the ministry responsible for emergency management.

“We recorded 390 disaster cases, which killed 52 people from April 1 to April 16,” said Adalbert Rukebanuka, director of the department’s Planning, Policy and Risk Reduction.

He said 107 people were injured.

“At least 19 homes have completely collapsed and 731 homes have been damaged,” he said.

The ministry has identified at least 522 disaster hotspots across the country, with around 22,000 households (approximately 97,000 from homes) at risk.

Additionally, 117 infrastructure, 23 public facilities and over 25,000 hectares of crops could be affected by extreme weather events.

More than 1,600 households in disaster risk hotspots must be moved urgently.

These households are located in eight districts that are expected to experience heavy rains through May.

The district includes Lusizi, Rubab, Nyamashek, Karanji, Latsiro, Nyabiv, Nyamagave and Nyargul.

To date, 800 families living in high-risk areas have been relocated and shelters are now available.

The April weather forecast shows an increase in rainfall compared to the previous year. According to the Rwanda Meteorology Agency, total rainfall is 100-350 mm, but normal rainfall in the past few years has been in the 100-300 mm range.

Heavyest rains of 300-350 mm are expected in many areas of the Rusiji district, eastern Nyamasheke, north of Karangi, western Nyamagabe and Niarguru.

Rainfall in the range of 250-300 mm is expected in the rest of the western states, the rest of Nyamagave and Nyaruguru, and most of the northern regions of the north.

Rainfall in the 200-250 mm range is expected to range from 200-250 mm in most parts of Nyanza, Luhango and Kamoni, Hue, Rulindo, Gichikambi, North Kigalicity and Central Gisagala.

Rainfall in the 150-200 mm range is expected in parts of Kigali, Amayaga region, Bugesara, Ruwamagana, Ngoma, Kirehe, Gatsubo, West Nyagatare, Kayonza and Northeast Gisagara.

The remainder of the eastern province expects a minimum rainfall (100-150 mm).
