The second game of the Serie B relegation playoff between Sampdoria and Salernitana was postponed for 48 hours after many Salernitana players and staff were admitted to hospital with food poisoning.
Salernitana had a formal request to reschedule a match that was accepted after a 21-man travel party got sick after a 2-0 defeat in the first leg on Sunday.
The second leg, originally scheduled for Salerno’s Friday (19:30 GMT), will be played simultaneously on Sunday.
Salernitana, who was facing demobilization to Italy’s third tier after dropping out of the Serie 12 months ago, was unable to train on Monday.
“We are truly shocked by what happened and the series of events that risk jeopardize Salernitana’s smooth and peaceful approach to the final and important minutes of the season,” said club CEO Maurizio Milano.
“At this point, many athletes and staff are unable to even show up at the sports centre and resume training.”
Salernitana is also seeking an investigation into “the cause of this widespread and serious episode.”
They were to play Frosinon in the relegation playoffs, but Brescia’s four-point deduction due to financial fraud meant they were automatically demoted in place of Sampdoria and replaced Frosinon in the playoffs.
