MOGADISH, SOMALIA – Former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed met with Somali Ambassador Richard Riley in Mogadishu on Sunday to discuss political and security development and the continued national construction process within the country.
The conference focused on strengthening the historical ties between the two countries and highlighted the importance of political stability as Somalia prepares for the national election scheduled for next year.
“We discussed the general situation in Somalia, security and politics in particular, which discussed the need to advance the state-building process, which is always dependent on political stability,” Sheikh Sharif said in a statement after the meeting.
Additionally, he expresses his gratitude to the United States for its security, counter-terrorism efforts and continued support in humanitarian assistance in Somalia.
The closed door consultations are as diplomatic efforts intensify Somali’s political leadership and support the country’s democratic transition after decades of family-based elections.
The United States has reiterated its commitment to support Somali’s efforts to build effective governance institutions despite continued political and security challenges.
