Mogadishu, Somali – A well-known Somali lawmaker has accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of ignoring the fight against al-Shabaab’s militants and denounced the growing political conflict over the constitutional amendments and election processes to weaken the government’s focus.
MP Abdirahman Abdishakur said at a press conference in Mogadishu that internal divisions and widespread corruption have damaged state institutions, lowered the morale of the Somali army, and warned that such dysfunction is giving Al-Shabaab a strategic advantage.
“The government is distracted by political civil war, but al-Shabaab remains a serious threat,” Abdishakul said. “The corruption and lack of coordination are eroding the very institutions that protect the country.”
He also launched a scathing attack on Congressional Speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nuru, also known as Adan Madbe, and accused him of obstructing Congress’s oversight and undermining the Congress’ role.
“Speakers treat the house like personal property,” Abdishakul said. “He makes secret transactions possible and protects poorly performed governments from accountability.”
The accusations came amid growing tensions between Somali political leaders and opposition figures, debates over election delays and proposals for constitutional reforms that promote unrest in the vulnerable horns of Africa.
