MOGADISH, SOLDIS – Somalia’s Speaker Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nou (Madhuv), has temporarily suspended 20 MPs (Parliamentary) from attending sessions in parliament due to security concerns.
The decision, communicated through a letter issued by the Congressional Superintendent’s Office on April 30, 2025, came hours after the disruption broke out in the House during Wednesday’s session, but it could not proceed.
In a statement, Speaker Madhuv emphasized that the move is consistent with the parliamentary process and aims to address new security threats. The suspension is a precaution as the country continues to face key issues regarding the safety of its government agencies.
Affected lawmakers have not disclosed a specific period of suspension, but affected MPs will be temporarily banned from participating in the session. The decision sparked debate within Somalia’s political landscape, with some lawmakers expressing concern about the impact on parliamentary activities.
This suspension comes at a time when the capital’s political crisis has risen. There, Somali lawmakers are about to take the House Speaker.
The lawmakers accused MP Abib of illegally stealing MP Abib for not attending the seat for two parliamentary sessions, according to House leaders.
The government is facing challenges in the country’s reform efforts as the NCC meeting, which was scheduled to begin today in Mogadishu, has been postponed until May 5th.
