The tribute continues to pour for Mankova Nutonbela, a music artist whose life was shortened when he was murdered outside the Ratanda home in Heidelberg on the evening of May 16th.
Suspicion of the Spaza Shop’s mafia involvement has emerged in what authorities are still investigating.
Ntombela (62) was shot shortly after leaving his store, leaving just five homes.
“My dad left the shop right after 18 hours and drove home. My brother, who was in the house, heard the car was out and when he left to open the gate, gunshots rang out and he went back home and ran.
“A few minutes later he went outside and realized that his dad had been shot in the car,” she said.
“We were called when we were in the store and when we got there he was still alive. When we rushed him to the hospital, we put him in one of our cars. We met the medical team along the way.
A prominent figure in the South African music scene, Ntombela was cherished for his melodic contributions and respected role as a businessman, educator and community leader.
His hit song “Lomshini Uyakhuluma! (Istokvel)” became the national anthem in the early 1990s and later gained new popularity through a remake by DJS Vetkuk and Mahoota.
The shockwave of his death echoed through the industry, with many taking them to social media to express their sadness.
