Africans celebrate 100 years as official language in complex history
The Africans became South Africa’s second official language on May 8, 1925, and along with English, replaced the Dutch, one of the two official languages of South Africa’s contemporary. 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of Afrikaans’ rise. However, the origins of language go back far back than last 100 years. It is a Creole word that arises from the pain and suffering of slavery, and the movement of indigenous peoples by European seamen and traders who later became colonialists. The first Africans appeared in the early 1800s, written by Islamic scholars in Arabic scripts, especially in Cape Madrasus. Despite the Afrikaans being later misused as a tool of oppression, communities such as Bo-Kaap reclaim and celebrate their important role in their foundations.

Govt provides a R381 million lifeline to the South African sick post office
The South African Post Office (SAPO) will receive a wage subsidy of R381 million from the government to cover the salaries of nearly 6,000 employees over the next six months as part of the ongoing business rescue process, the IOL reports. This support, drawn from the Temporary Employer/Employee Relief Scheme (TERS), aims to ease the financial burden on SAPO while implementing a turnaround strategy. Portfolio Committee Chairman Xcella Dico described the post office’s six-month revenue support as “a much-needed lifeline where both moral and duties are extended by the state.” In a formal request last year, SAPO’s business rescue team sought an additional R3.8 billion for government assistance to ensure sustainability of state-owned businesses during the ongoing financial overhaul.
