The corruption case of former Minister of Defense is approaching trial

Former Chairman Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula will appear before the Pretoria High Court as her corruption case approaches trial, EWN reports. During her tenure as Minister of Defence, she faces allegations that she will seek and accept bribes from her defense contractors. The case resumed after a three-month break, during which time the state complied with a defence request to disclose key documents, including communications between investigators and prosecutors and records relating to the state’s star witness Nombasa ntsondwa-ndhlovu. The state initially wanted to challenge Mapisa-Nqakula’s request, but said it would cooperate to bring the matter to court quickly.

The delay in cancer treatment was unconstitutional

The Gauten High Court in Johannesburg reports the EWN that failure to provide timely radiation tumor treatment is illegal and unconstitutional following the legal challenges of the Cancer Alliance, represented by Section 27. The court found that the department violated patients’ rights to health care and revealed that the March 2023 backlog list awaited 2,400 cancer patients. Despite receiving R784 million from Gauteng Treasury to deal with the crisis, the department delayed the appointment of the service provider and promoted only the bid in October 2023. The Cancer Alliance raised concerns that it would secure R250 million, meaning that patients on the backlog list will continue to wait for treatment. The court also ordered the department to update its backlog list within 45 days and submitted a report on the provision of radiation oncology services.

Warm winter on the edge of the dryer, Western Cape

The South African Weather Service predicts drier, warmer winters in the Western Cape with sub-average rainfall and higher than normal temperatures, EWN reports. Chief scientist Christine Engelbrecht warned that snow enthusiasts could be disappointed as the decrease in precipitation results in less cloud cover and less snow cover at higher altitudes.
