Gauteng arrests hijacker in police uniform
Gauteng police arrested five suspects, between the ages of 50 and 69, and arrested them for hijacking a truck while hugging law enforcement officers by wearing uniforms from the Ekul Frenni Metro Police Station (EMPD) and South Africa Police Service (SAPS). The hijacked truck was recovered and two vehicles used for crime, the Hyundai Accent and the Hyundai IX35, were seized. Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, chairman of the Gauteng State Commission, praised the operation as an important breakthrough in tackling truck hijacking.
Tembisa Hospital Fire destroys services again
Deputy Minister Joe Farrah reported that despite the second fire in the hospital’s main outpatient department, the public was relieved that services at Tembisa Hospital continued. Previous fires were already closely connected to the area. No patients were present when the fire broke out. Safety assessments and air quality analysis were performed after smoke spread to nearby units, including pharmacies, ophthalmology clinics and temporary emergency areas. Phaahla said the business continuity plan is in place to minimize disruption. The emergency had been decoupled, but walk-in service continued. The causes of both fires are still under investigation.
Alexandra residents were angry at the swift disconnect amid a failure to provide services
Residents of Alexandra in northern Johannesburg have expressed their dissatisfaction with the failure to provide basic services while quickly deploying armed officers to disconnect illegal power connections, EWN reports. Urban power engineers with law enforcement made disconnects in town, but residents often undermine efforts to stabilize the grid and often reconnect. Many people are afraid of uncertainty in the future as they face rising crime, lower temperatures and unsafe infrastructure. Locals said repeated pleas for proper power supply have been ignored and tensions have been raised.
