Forest, Fisheries and the Environment Dr. Dion George joins the global community to celebrate Earth Day 2025, reflecting South Africa’s progress in protecting the environment and promoting a sustainable future for all.
“Since taking office as Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, my department has worked diligently to advance policies and initiatives that protect the environment while promoting resilience and prosperity,” the minister said Tuesday.
This year’s Earth Day is celebrated under the theme of “Our Power, Our Planet.” This is called for us to unite around renewable energy and global targets by 2030, as agreed at the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
“We are accelerating the transition to renewable energy by expanding solar and wind energy to address South Africa’s electricity needs, while advancing climate targets and meeting South Africa’s electricity needs, in line with the ambitions of the Paris Agreement.
“We are responsible for Eskom’s emissions through extremely strict conditions, ensuring compliance with environmental standards while supporting energy reliability.
“We are actively developing carbon markets to unlock the rich possibilities of South Africa’s biodiversity and create economic opportunities while promoting conservation and climate resilience,” George said.
South Africa is steadfast in its efforts to protect its rich fauna and flora.
“The groundbreaking achievements are mediating trials to save the iconic African penguins from extinction, ensuring that this precious species will withstand future generations.
“We are also cracking down on environmental crime and holding criminals accountable for poaching valuable animals such as Rhino, Abalone, Pangolins and plants to protect biodiversity for future generations.
“In rare countries like South Africa, where climate change is intensifying complexity, my sector prioritizes sustainable water management to ensure this critical resource,” the minister said.
He praised Cape Town for his climate change disclosure and recognition as a national recipient of the One Planet City Challenge, and for his A-rated rating from the Carbon Disclosure Project in 2022.
“As a member of the C40 Cities Alliance, Cape Town is dedicated to innovative solutions to combat climate change. The urban ambition to achieve urban forest status over the next few years will leverage nature-based solutions to expand the city’s canopy cover mapped via advanced satellite imaging, protecting high heat and biocarbons, and protecting banks.
