Compliance concerns rise amid ongoing spaza shop registration
As Spaza Shop registration continues, compliance remains a major concern following multiple foodborne disease cases, including the tragic deaths of 23 children at Gauteng last year. More than 17,000 spaza shops are registered with the state, and non-compliant businesses face temporary closures until they meet regulatory requirements. The convicted rapist was sentenced to life in prison at Limpopo Court
Ritabi Magistrates’ Court in Limpopo has sentenced 33-year-old Philip Nukuna Nugomane to life in prison for the 2016 rape of a 15-year-old girl, IOL reports. The court heard that Ngomane, armed with firearms, dragged the victim into a bush near Babanana village and raped him three times before fleeing. The case was investigated by the Tzaneen FCS unit, leading to Ngomane’s arrest in July 2017. Despite being released on R2,500 bail in 2023, Ngomane remained in custody until his January 2025 conviction. Limpopo Police Chief General General Thembi Hadebe praised the investigation work and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to combat gender-based violence.
