An investigation by the South African Accountability Journalism Project supports allegations of systemic corruption in the Eastern Cape Division of the High Court in Moussata. Court officials are seeking bribery from lawyers to perform regular administrative functions.
Counsel seeking to perform routine administrative functions in the Eastern Cape Division of the High Court in Mthatha, claims that court officials are seeking bribes to perform tasks that should be part of their usual work.
The allegations were first detailed in an anonymous letter to President Zamaninulangrela, Eastern Cape Speaker in December 2024, followed by a representation judge for Deputy Justice Bantubon Ketokota.
Despite the severity of the allegations, neither judge responded to requests for comment, originally emailed March 24th. It is unclear what their reaction to the December 2024 letter was, and whether they took action.
Judge Mandisa Maya was copied in our query and her spokesman Lindkle Nkomond granted the receipt. He said “The Supreme Court’s Office (OCJ) has zero resistance to fraud and corruption,” and deals with complaints related to these.”
