The city of Jobrug to remove illegal residents from hijacked buildings
The city of Johannesburg has identified 11 hijacked municipally owned buildings that require evacuation, the IOL reports. Many of the buildings are in a terrible, devastated state with broken windows, leaking sewage, piles of garbage, and overcrowded, with many residents considered undocumented immigrants. The CASA MIA building has confirmed an evacuation order, and inside, evidence of a recycling operation was found and horrifying living conditions were found. Residents who have lived there for over three years and ran an informal recycling business refused illegal occupancy, claiming they paid rent to an unknown individual. However, Human Settlements MMC Mlungisi Mabaso said that Casa Mia is owned by the city of Johannesburg and no rental payments have been received from those who occupy the property. The hijacked building problem has long plagued Johannesburg, attracting new attention after the 2023 Marshalltown fire killed 77 people.

An investigation case was held to determine whether the boy was drowned or killed and abandoned. Savhuli reportedly took other children to a local store. His loss of failure caused community outrage, with some police blaming the inaction. Masondo claimed they were practical in the case and were looking for a boy.
