President Cyril Ramaphosa joined the world by expressing his sadness in the death of Pope Francis, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
The Pope passed away on Monday in Casa Santa Malta, his residence in the Vatican city. He was 88 years old.
“Catholics and people of all faiths are sad today by the death of a spiritual leader who wanted to unite humanity and see a world dominated by fundamental human values.
“A church leader and global figure, Pope Francis has advanced a global view of inclusion, equality, care for marginalized individuals and groups, as well as responsible and sustainable custody of the natural environment,” President Ramaphosa said in a statement.
The president described Pope Francis as world famous for his compassion for the poor and marginalized people.
He was the first Latin American pope, serving in 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.
“An extraordinary life story for the clergy and tensions about sacred attitudes and humility, and a deep commitment to making the church and the world a better place for all humanity.
“Suddenly after the Easter celebration, the passage of Pope Francis will extend this traditional period of prayer and reflection.
