South Africa: Statement on Confusion at Western Cape Branch Event

Johannesburg – The South African Institute for International Studies (SAIIA) acknowledges the confusion that occurred at an event hosted by the Western Cape Branch on May 7, recognising Emma Louise Powell (DA), a member of Parliament and national spokesman for international relations and international cooperation.

The topic of discussion was South Africa’s strategic goals within the G20 and bilateral relationships with the US, European Union and BRICS+ partners. The presence of Ms. Powell, given her DA’s position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, led to protests and the collapse of the event due to security concerns.

It is important to make it clear that Saiia has active branches in Cape Town (the Western Cape) and Pietermaritzburg. This particular event was held and hosted by the Western Cape Branch. The views expressed by speakers at the SAIIA event do not necessarily represent the perspective or approval of the Institute and/or its national councils.

Saiya supports just and lasting peace in the Middle East, recognizing the rights of both people living west of the Jordan River. The ongoing war in Gaza is not only a humanitarian tragedy that saw tens of thousands of civilians die, but it is also unremarkable in the enduring peace.

The speaker’s position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a historical and important issue in South Africa’s broader international relations, acknowledges that it is at odds with the many and deeply embraced beliefs of many of South Africa and the global community.

Saiia is committed to fostering open and robust discussion of key issues, recognizing that critical perspectives are important to providing an informed perspective. In this example, our Western Cape branch was context sensitive and had to ensure a diverse perspective by including panelists in political disparities. We work with all branches to ensure that every future event includes a balanced perspective.

One of our priorities when organizing public events is continuing to summarise the safety and well-being of our participants, staff and the wider community. We deeply regret the situation that unfolds and review the event planning process to ensure that future discussions take place in a safe and diverse way.
