Community seeks accountability in the Woodlands acid attack case

Residents of the Woodlands community in Mitchell Plain are requesting a thorough police investigation after the 17-year-old was said to have been tricked into drinking drainage at a butcher in Mitchells, EWN reports. The incident left the teenager hospitalized with severe internal injuries, including damage to his stomach and esophagus. Police have opened a lawsuit for attempted murder, but no arrests have been made. Community member Raafiqah Ganger said the community was seeking accountability and urged angry residents not to loot the property while the investigation was underway. The property owner declined to comment.

Many South Africans rely on loans to achieve their goals

Debt Busters’ first quarter 2025 debt index reveals a troubling increase in the number of South Africans relying on individuals and payday loans to address the rising costs of living, SABC News reports. A third of credit activity consumers are significantly behind in payments, facing legal action, or are listed, struggling to repay. Despite increasing consumer reliability, the debt-to-revenue ratio of top earners has reached record highs, with 91% of those seeking debt counseling holding personal loans. Debt Busters COO Benay Sager says the situation is particularly disastrous for young people, warning that these are the worst numbers seen since 2017.

Chidimma Adetshina’s mother sees her bail conditions relaxing

Annabella Lango, mother of former Miss South Africa finalist Chijima Antetosina, relaxed some of her bail conditions after she appeared in court, EWN reports. Cape Town Magistrates Court granted permission to leave the house under the 9pm curfew and attend other legal proceedings unrelated to her case. Rungo has been under strict house arrest since February after being arrested for staying in South Africa despite his ID being revoked last September. She is expected to return to court on September 12th.
