Addis Ababa – Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni arrived in South Sudan’s capital, Juba, for a visit on Thursday.
Museveni’s visit to Juba comes amidst tensions in oil-rich East African countries after Leek Machar, one of the vice presidents of last month, was arrested in the capital at the end of last month.
Museveni was picked up by President Salva Kiir at Juba International Airport.
Twoleadres then held a private meeting before the President of Uganda returned to Uganda. Tensions in the country have been rising in recent weeks following Machar’s arrest.
Machar political groups say the 2018 agreement, the basis for relative peace after the brutal civilians are effectively over, has heightened fears of returning to war as government forces loyal to Kiel’s combat soldiers and armed militias loyal to Machar.
Museveni’s visit also follows the arrival of African Union mediators in the South Sudan capital to assess the country’s circumstances.
