Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has accepted his role at his alma mater Matter Davidson College as assistant general manager of the basketball program, university officials told ESPN.
Curry became the first active player in major US professional sports and holds management positions on the NCAA team.
In his new role, Curry, who played three seasons with Davidson (2006-09), provides guidance to male and female teams based on his university and professional experience.
He will work with general manager Austin Bunz, a former member of the Under Armour Global Sports Marketing Team. Curry first signed with Under Armour in 2013, and in 2020 it launched its own curry brand as an independent venture with the company. He also signed a lifetime contract shoe contract in recent years.
Curry, his wife Aisha Curry, and longtime Davidson University supporters Don, Matt and Erica Berman will also launch an eight-figure fund for both male and female programs. Matt Berman, who played football for Davidson for three seasons as a member of the 2005 class, will be another assistant GM.
“Davidson’s experience is top notch,” Curry said in a statement released by the school. “From my arrival at Davidson in 2006, I have demonstrated that I now have the opportunity to play basketball at the highest level, and have achieved great education, a great network through Davidson alumni, and I continue to wave the Davidson flag.
As Davidson’s sophomore, Curry sets a 3-pointer NCAA single-season record, being selected twice to the Conference Player of the Year, and after his junior year he became the seventh overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft.
Future Hall of Famer won two most valuable player awards and four championships with the Warriors, winning their 16th season with the team.
Curry returned to Davidson in 2022 and earned her bachelor’s degree as a member of the 2010 class. He was also inducted into the school hall of fame.
In a similar move, retired NFL quarterback Andrew Luck accepted the general manager position at his alma mater Stanford last year.
