The Wigan Warriors took a win over the cash-bound Salford Red Devils as they ran on 10 tries at Brick Community Stadium in Sankis.
After a narrow defeat by Hull FC in the Challenge Cup and Leeds Rynos in the Super League last Saturday, the winner of last season’s record-breaking four trophies regained a bit of order.
But they were still given a much better game than they thought against Salford, a crisis club that had changed so much more than they expected, still in the current situation of the patched-up club.
Hat-trick guy Jake Wardle scored his first, third and final attempts, while Jaifield also crossed two, junior Nsemba, Liam Marshall, Beban French, Sam Walters and Zac Eckersley, all decorated with seven of the 10 conversions from Harry Smith.
On the Salford side, which was not easily made its appearance, Wigan chokes off the other four tries. And home fans enjoyed a welcome return to action for young Wigan forward Brad O’Neill, who returned after last season’s ACL injury for his first appearance since July.
But Wigan did all the scores and in the process they had 13 consecutive wins over Salford, which was also a day to praise the weakened, tired, depleted army of visitors due to the substantial unpaid efforts they put in.
And when Nathan Connell’s last minute attempt was brutally excluded, their day was complete – even from the crowd’s house to breathless breath of disappointment.
